Grainger Worcester Reticulated Porcelain Ewer C.1890

19th century
Description

A finely made Grainger Worcester reticulated porcelain ewer dating from around 1890.

The piece has a lobed globular body with intricate pierced decoration, alternating with pink panels painted with gilt flowering scrolls and turquoise enamel bead accents within gilt borders. The neck forms the spout and is also fully reticulated, while the elegant C-scroll handle is heightened in gilt.

Grainger Worcester produced some exceptionally skilful reticulated wares in the second half of the 19th century. Although less widely recognised than some Royal Worcester pierced pieces, these wares are notable for their technical accomplishment and distinctive decorative style. This example reflects the taste of the Aesthetic period, with ornament inspired by tracery and Eastern decorative sources.

Printed factory mark to the base.

Height: 12.5 cm

Condition: Excellent. No damage. No restoration. Minimal wear to gilding only.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A reticulated porcelain ewer is an ornamental decorative jug featuring intricate, hand-cut pierced or latticework patterns created in the clay body before firing.

These pieces were typically crafted from fine bone china or soft-paste porcelain, decorated with hand-applied coloured glazes, raised enamelling, and accent gilding.

Authentic pieces generally display backstamps indicating Grainger & Co. or Worcester manufacture, precise hand-cut piercings, and high-grade gilding without coarse moulding seams.

Display the ewer on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within an illuminated display cabinet to highlight the openwork piercing against a neutral backdrop.

Clean gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust from pierced areas, avoiding immersion in water or abrasive chemical cleaners that could damage surface gilding.
