Netsuke were created during the Edo period in Japan as functional carved toggles. Because traditional kimono lacked pockets, personal belongings were suspended in pouches from the sash using a cord anchored by a netsuke.

Netsuke artisans traditionally carved pieces from boxwood, ivory, stag antler, and ebony. Rarer organic materials included fossilised amber, coral, tortoise shell, and horn.

Authentic natural or reconstructed amber exhibits warm translucency, natural inclusions, and lightweight warmth to the touch. Under ultraviolet light, genuine amber typically displays characteristic fluorescence distinct from glass or synthetic plastics.
