Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency secretaire chest is an early 19th-century British case piece that combines a traditional chest of drawers with a pull-out or drop-front desk drawer. The top section opens to reveal an organised interior fitted with pigeonholes, small drawers, and a flat writing surface.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid flame mahogany or mahogany veneers, with interior drawers often made of oak or pine secondary woods. Writing surfaces were typically inset with tool-embossed leather or baize fabric, accompanied by brass drawer pulls and quadrant hinges.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, original brass locks, and natural timber oxidisation inside the carcass. The secretaire drawer front often mimics two standard drawers externally but features a spring-catch or release mechanism to drop the writing panel forward.

Place a secretaire chest in a formal study, living room, or hallway to serve as a hidden workstation. Pair it with a classic table lamp, contemporary framed artwork hung above the cabinet, and a minimalist desk chair to balance historical proportions with modern functionality.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or veneer cracking. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the wood grain, and avoid chemical cleaners on the internal writing surface or patinated brass fittings.
