1930s Highgate School Cupboard

1920 - 1940
Description

A characterful early 20th century British school cupboard, dating from the 1930s.

Constructed in stained Oak with a pine-lined interior, the cupboard has hand-painted signage to the doors reading “Highgate School & Office Sect. Use Only”, along with additional instructions relating to internal use.

The interior is fitted with a series of practical shelves, typical of utilitarian school furniture, designed for the storage of paperwork, stationery, or teaching materials.

The doors retain their original escutcheons and working locks, along with later handles. There is visible wear, scuffs, and marks throughout, all consistent with age and use, adding to its overall charm and character.

A highly decorative yet functional piece, ideal for retail, hospitality, or residential interiors seeking an authentic period feature. We believe that the hand painting has been touched up over years making it a newer addition .

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Interwar British schoolhouse furniture was constructed for practical durability, utilizing heavy joinery, solid timber, and functional proportions designed for institutional storage.

These cupboards were typically constructed from solid softwoods such as pine or pitch pine, featuring simple panelled doors, mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-painted identification graphics.

Authentic pieces show natural surface wear, historic locks or brass keyhole escutcheons, timber shrinkage along panel seams, and genuine hand-lettered signage rather than modern stencils.

A painted school cupboard works well as a statement storage piece in an entryway, home office, or hallway, adding historical interest and texture when contrasted against clean architectural lines.

Clean the surface gently using a dry soft cloth to preserve the original painted graphics, and apply a neutral beeswax sparingly to unpainted timber areas while avoiding damp environments.
