Early 20th Century Candelabra Style Table Lamp

1900 - 1920
Description

A really characterful early 20th century table lamp, dating to around the 1920s–1930s.

The lamp is cast in metal with a dark, aged patinated finish, most likely spelter, and is designed in a decorative candelabra form with scrolling arms and a central stem. The shape takes inspiration from earlier candle lighting, but this was made as an electric piece from the outset.

It retains its original candle sleeves and fittings, along with an integrated switch to the base, typical of the period. The overall look has a nice slightly gothic / revival feel, with the scrolling arms giving it a good sense of movement.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A candelabra style table lamp is an electric lighting fixture designed to emulate traditional multi-armed candleholders, popularised during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These lamps were primarily crafted from solid brass, bronze, or cast metal alloys, often featuring faux candle sleeves made from card, wax, or plastic to cover the electrical bulb sockets.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast metal construction, natural age-related patination, historical socket components, and original wiring exit points near the base rim.

Position the lamp on a side table, desk, or sideboard, pairing it with low-wattage accent bulbs or small clip-on fabric shades to complement traditional and eclectic interior designs.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive metal polishes that can strip away the historical aged patina.
