17th/18th Century Oil on Oak Panel – Follower of Rosa Di Tivoli (Philipp Peter Roos) Shepherd & Animals Landscape Antique Gilt Frame

18th century
Description

A charming antique oil painting on oak panel depicting a pastoral scene of a shepherd resting with his animals, including a standing horse and livestock set within a gentle landscape. The composition, subject matter and handling are very much in the manner of Rosa di Tivoli (Philipp Peter Roos, 1655–1706), known for his lively depictions of animals in rustic settings.

Executed in the late 17th to early 18th century style, this piece is best described as a follower of Rosa di Tivoli, capturing the essence of his work with warm tones, naturalistic animal forms and a tranquil rural atmosphere. Such cabinet-sized paintings were popular with Grand Tour travellers and collectors of the period.

The panel is stable and well preserved for its age. There is visible craquelure, surface wear and some areas of old varnish and light surface marks, consistent with age. The frame shows losses and wear to the gilding. Overall, the piece displays attractively and retains good decorative appeal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baroque pastoral landscape paintings often feature rural figures, livestock, and natural scenery influenced by Italianate light and rustic themes popularised in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European art.

Artists applied oil pigments directly onto seasoned hardwood panels, such as oak, which were planed and prepared with a gesso priming coat to prevent natural wood tannins from bleeding into the paint layers.

Authentic period panel paintings typically display natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, structural wood movement or warping, hand-cut panel bevels on the reverse, and genuine oxidisation on giltwood frames.

Position the painting as a central focal point above a console table or mantelpiece, contrasting its gilded ornamentation against neutral tones, dark matte walls, or contemporary minimalist decor.

Keep the panel in a stable environment with controlled humidity to minimise timber expansion and contraction, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid water, cleaning solvents, or commercial polishes.
