Portrait of a Gentleman – Attributed to the Abraham Family (18th Century):
A highly decorative and atmospheric 18th century English School portrait depicting a gentleman, traditionally identified within the Abraham family line. The sitter is presented half-length, wearing a deep green coat and white cravat, set against a dark interior background typical of Georgian portraiture.
The painting displays strong period character, with softly modelled facial features, warm flesh tones, and a restrained yet confident palette. The rich green of the coat contrasts beautifully with the subdued background, giving the piece a refined and timeless presence.
Research into the Abraham family suggests a connection to John Abraham (1687–1771) of Lancashire, a figure associated with Hawkshead and later Mancheste
...r. He married Sarah Foster in 1722 and was part of a large and established family, raising numerous children within the region.
This is a striking example of Georgian portrait painting, offering both historical interest and strong interior decorative appeal.
