French National Guard Grenadier Officer’s Shako, July Monarchy Period, Circa 1830–1848

19th century
Description

A good original example of a French National Guard grenadier officer’s shako, dating from the July Monarchy period, circa 1830–1848.

Of tall cylindrical form, retaining its Gallic cock front plate above a trophy device, with tricolour cockade and original style chin scales mounted from a turned rosette. The body is of leather construction over a light internal frame, as typically encountered in officer-grade shakos of this period.

The helmet retains its original leather liner of multi-tongue form, showing age-related crazing and wear consistent with mid-19th century manufacture. The exterior displays an even, undisturbed patina, with fittings remaining well-set and consistent throughout.

A scarce and highly decorative example of French National Guard headgear, presented in sound and original condition.

Condition Report:

• Overall good period condition with expected age-related wear

• Leather body showing scuffs, minor distortion, and surface wear

• Original liner present, dry with cracking and loss consistent with age

• Chin scales and plate intact; minor wear to high points

• Cockade present with expected age-related wear.

Measurements:

• Height: 23cm

• Width: 21.5cm

• Depth: 21.5

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A shako is a tall, cylindrical military cap featuring a visor and decorative insignia, which was widely adopted by European armed forces during the 19th century.

Shakos were typically constructed from stiffened felt, beaver fur, or leather, trimmed with metallic braid, brass or silvered insignia plates, and finished with a stiff visor.

Authentic July Monarchy shakos feature specific period insignia, including the Gallic rooster emblem on the front plate and tricolour cockades, along with period-appropriate hand-stitching and metalwork oxidisation.

An antique shako functions as a historical curio object when displayed on a custom stand inside a glass cabinet, on an executive desk, or placed on a bookshelf.

Keep the item in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, avoid handling delicate fabrics directly without cotton gloves, and store on a padded support to maintain structural form.
