1920s F. Sage & Co. Mahogany Shop Display Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

Made by one of the best shopfitters of the period, this is a fantastic early 20th-century shop display cabinet by F. Sage & Co. Ltd.

The cabinet is made from solid mahogany and fitted with large glass panels to the front, sides and top, allowing items inside to be clearly viewed from multiple angles. The pair of glazed front doors open to reveal an adjustable interior with original metal shelf supports, while the base retains its velvet-lined display surface, ideal for presenting jewellery, small objects, or other retail items.

The cabinet still carries the original F. Sage & Co. maker’s plaque, a firm well known for producing high-quality fittings for department stores, jewellers and luxury retailers during the early 20th century.

Today the cabinet works beautifully as a display piece for collectibles, jewellery or decorative objects, while also making a striking feature in a retail interior, boutique, or home setting.

Comes with 2 glass shelves.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 20th century, specialised commercial fitters produced high-quality glazed cabinets designed for retail establishments and haberdasheries. These cases allowed goods to remain fully visible while keeping items protected from dust and damage.

These cabinets typically feature slim mahogany or oak framing, glass panes on all sides for maximum visibility, and brass fittings such as drop ring catches and internal shelf support brackets.

Authentic commercial pieces often bear stamped metal maker plaques from prominent manufacturers. Key indicators include narrow timber framing, original brass latches, and internal mounting tracks for adjustable glass shelves.

A glazed retail cabinet serves as a focal point in a dining room, hallway, or study for displaying ceramics, glassware, or curiosities. Its slim wooden framework and transparent panels maintain visual light while offering structured organization.

Glass panels should be cleaned with a microfibre cloth and non-ammonia cleaner, avoiding moisture contact with the wooden frame. Application of a natural beeswax polish on the mahogany timber helps preserve the finish and patina.
