1920s Draper’s Countertop Needle Drawer Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

Now this is a lovely little find. Dating from the early 20th century, this small countertop haberdashery drawer cabinet was most likely originally used within a sewing or draper shop for the storage and organisation of needles and other small sewing items. The cabinet is made from dark stained beech and fitted with three drawers, each retaining painted labels reading “Our Own”, “Celebrated”, and “Needles & C.”

Each drawer is finished with decorative brass drop handles, while the interiors are divided into small compartments, originally intended to neatly organise packets of needles and other small accessories. Pieces like this would typically have sat behind the counter of a draper’s or haberdashery shop, allowing the shopkeeper to quickly access different types of sewing supplies.

Today it works beautifully as a decorative storage piece for a desk, workshop, studio, or interior, while also making a wonderful display item in a retail setting.

We believe the hand-painted labels may have been retouched at some point over the years, making them a slightly later addition to the piece.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drapers needle cabinet is a compact, multi-drawer storage unit historically used in 19th and early 20th-century haberdasheries and dry goods stores to organise, display, and sell various sizes of sewing needles, threads, and small mercery items.

These cabinets were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pine, fitted with brass or cast-metal drop handles, and often featured painted or gilded commercial lettering across the drawer fronts.

Authentic commercial cabinets feature age-appropriate wear to painted typography, period-correct brass drop handles or bin pulls, hand-cut dovetail or rebate drawer joints, and visible oxidisation on original metal fittings.

This type of miniature cabinet functions effectively on an office desk, console table, or bookshelf to organise small stationery items, jewellery, or craft supplies while adding historic character to a space.

Preserve the wood finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could strip original hand-painted lettering or surface patination.
