Original 19th Century Oil on Canvas – C.s. Lidderdale – C. 1870

19th century
Description

A beautiful original oil on canvas in the manner of Charles Sillem Lidderdale RBA (b. 1831 d. 1895) of a young woman in a woven bonnet and patterned shawl looking back over her shoulder.

Lidderdale was a British artist. He painted a series ‘peasant women’ including of a ‘fishergirl’ in similar pose but he did not sign all of his work and this painting is not signed or monogrammed. However the subject, colours, tones and brush techniques used here closely match Lidderdale’s signed paintings which reside in National Galleries worldwide.

In a very good carved 19th century water gilded frame with leaf carved corners and finely detailed inner foliate and reeded and crossed outer borders and which appears original.

Old and very small patched repair to rear of canvas and a few small losses to the gilding of the frame.

An evocative and charming well executed painting in good original condition.

Dimensions of frame are 23.5 inches x 20.5 inches and of painting are 13.75 inches x 10.5 inches

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian oil portraiture from the 1870s focused on realistic figurative subjects, detailed costume depiction, and psychological depth, influenced by contemporary genre painting trends across Britain and Europe.

Artists typically applied oil paints composed of natural pigments and drying oils onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within hand-carved or moulded giltwood and gesso frames.

Authentic period oil paintings display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, natural darkening of historic varnish, stretcher bar impressions on the canvas, and traditional gilding techniques on the frame.

A framed 19th-century portrait serves as a focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantel, incorporated into a gallery wall, or hung against neutral or deep saturated wall colours.

Position the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources, dusting the frame lightly with a soft brush while avoiding liquid cleaners on the canvas surface.
