Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French marriage mirrors, or miroirs de mariage, were traditional wedding gifts given in France during the 18th and 19th centuries to symbolise prosperity and conjugal harmony. They are characterised by intricate carved crestings featuring symbolic iconography such as doves, torches, ribbons, and floral garlands.

These mirrors were constructed from carved softwoods, such as linden or pine, which were coated with gesso, smoothed, and decorated using water-gilding techniques with thin gold leaf. The mirror plates were historically made using mercury-backed glass, which develops characteristic dark spots and soft reflections over time.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery, original gesso layers beneath gold leaf showing natural wear or bole showing through, and mercury glass with light surface distress or foxing. The backboards are typically hand-hewn oak or pine planks fastened with period square-headed nails or wooden pegs.

A carved giltwood mirror works well hung above a mantelpiece, positioned atop a hall console table, or placed in a modern bathroom to create contrast against contemporary tiling. Its reflective surface amplifies natural light while introducing historic texture to contemporary schemes.

Dust the carved gilding lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can dissolve the gesso and strip gold leaf. Clean the glass plate carefully using a soft lint-free cloth dampened slightly with water, ensuring liquid does not seep behind the frame edges.
