Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tub back armchair is a style of deeply cushioned seating featuring a continuous, curved backrest that wraps around to form integral armrests. Originating in the 18th century and refined during the Victorian era, these chairs were designed to provide comfortable seating for parlours and libraries.

Nineteenth-century tub chairs were typically constructed with a solid hardwood frame, such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with turned front legs set on brass castors. Traditional upholstery methods incorporated coil springs, horsehair padding, deep buttoning, and fabrics like velvet, damask, or leather.

Authentic Victorian tub chairs feature hand-turned wood legs, often with original brass castors, and hand-stitched upholstery with deep buttoning. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-tied coil springs, hessian webbing, and hand-cut timber joinery consistent with 19th-century construction techniques.

A Victorian velvet tub chair introduces tactile contrast and historical detail to modern spaces when paired with minimalist architecture or clean-lined contemporary furniture. Placing the chair in a reading corner, bedroom, or alongside a modern floor lamp creates a balanced mix of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Velvet upholstery should be gently brushed using a soft-bristled clothes brush in the direction of the pile to remove dust and prevent flattening. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent fabric fading, while wooden legs and castors should be cleaned with a dry microfibre cloth and conditioned with natural beeswax.
