Description

A fine mid-19th century camphor wood military campaign secrétaire chest, circa 1860.

Constructed in two parts for ease of transport, this handsome piece features beautifully figured timber with inlaid drawer fronts, carved corner details, and raised on turned feet.

The upper section opens to reveal a fitted secrétaire interior, complete with an arrangement of pigeonholes and small drawers, centered around a new hand-dyed green leather writing surface.

The chest retains brass campaign handles, working locks, and key.

Presented in good original condition, this piece is likely of Anglo-Asian origin, possibly Hong Kong, and is a superb example of functional campaign furniture from the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign chests were portable storage units designed for British military officers during overseas deployments in the 18th and 19th centuries, typically featuring a two-part split construction for ease of transport.

These chests were commonly constructed from durable timbers such as teak, mahogany, or aromatic camphor wood, equipped with flush-fitting brass handles and iron side carrying handles.

Authentic pieces feature inset hardware designed to prevent damage during movement, a two-part modular frame, original brass locks, and often retain a characteristic aroma when built from camphor wood.

A campaign chest serves as a functional focal point in a hallway, living room, or home office, combining effectively with neutral wall finishes, leather seating, and contemporary art.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish periodically, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage.
