Manufacture De La Reine Covered Trembleuse Cup and Saucer, Paris C.1780–1800

18th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A fine covered trembleuse chocolate cup and saucer in Paris porcelain, made at the Manufacture de la Reine, rue Thiroux, in the late 18th century, circa 1780–1800.

Founded by André Leboeuf in 1776, the factory received the official protection of Queen Marie-Antoinette in 1778, when it adopted the red crowned A mark and was permitted to bear the name Manufacture à la Reine; these are precisely the marks seen on the cup and saucer.

Its covered trembleuse form is both elegant and practical, with the deep saucer made to secure the cup during service, particularly for hot chocolate. The cup is tall and gently tapering, with a refined loop handle and a domed cover finished with a moulded berry finial and green leaf.

The decoration is delicate and distinctly Parisian in character, with pink and lilac ribbon trellis panels, scattered blue floral sprigs, and gilt borders on a white ground. The saucer carries a geometric ribbon pattern that introduces a more structured neoclassical note.

A highly desirable example of late 18th-century Paris porcelain, appealing for its royal factory mark, refined chocolate cup form, and elegant Louis XVI decoration.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A trembleuse is a specialised cup and saucer set designed in the 18th century featuring a raised or recessed gallery ring on the saucer to prevent liquid from spilling if a hand trembled.

These items were crafted from hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain, finished with hand-painted enamel floral motifs, overglaze gilding, and moulded ceramic finials.

Authentic pieces frequently display hand-painted factory marks beneath the base, fine gilded borders applied by hand, and minor surface glaze variations typical of period kilns.

Display the piece within a glazed china display cabinet, upon an open etagere, or centrally arranged on a sideboard top alongside period glassware.

Wash gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild washing-up liquid, avoiding abrasive cloths or modern dishwashers to protect overglaze enamelling and gilding.
