Derby Porcelain Figure of Diana with Hunting Dog, Patch Period C.1760–1765

Description

A finely modelled Derby porcelain figure of Diana, the classical goddess of the hunt, accompanied by a greyhound.

Executed in soft-paste porcelain and decorated with coloured enamels and gilding, the figure stands on an elegant rococo base with applied flowers and foliage. Diana holds a long bow while reaching towards the quiver at her back, the hound seated beside her. The composition reflects classical representations of the Roman goddess of the chase and became one of the notable mythological subjects produced by the early Derby factory.

The model is recorded by Peter Bradshaw in Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848 (pp. 77, 110) as model D27 of the Pale period, later reissued during the Patch period as model E50. Comparable examples are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum and are associated with the early production of the Derby manufactory under William Duesbury.

The Patch Period of Derby porcelain, dating approximately from 1756 to 1770, is identified by three or four unglazed spots or pads on the underside of the base where the piece rested on clay supports during firing. Figures from this era often feature soft-paste porcelain, pastel enamel palettes, hand-modelled floral details, and Rococo scrollwork bases.

Derby figurines of this period were made using soft-paste porcelain composed of clay and glass frit. The pieces were decorated with overglaze enamels, gilding, and intricate hand-applied ceramic flowers prior to secondary firings.

Authentic items show characteristic dark pads or patches on the unglazed base ring, firing tears or blemishes, soft hand-painted enamel decoration, and a translucency typical of soft-paste bodies. Later reproductions usually display hard-paste porcelain, printed factory marks, or uniform glaze coverage underneath.

These ceramic sculptures are commonly displayed inside glass vitrines, placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, or styled alongside modern art and books on shelving to create visual contrast within traditional or eclectic interiors.
