Bow Porcelain Figure of a Bacchus Putto, C.1760

Description

A charming Bow soft-paste porcelain figure of a Bacchus putto, made in London about c. 1760. The nude child is shown with grapes, a vine garland and a goblet, standing on a lively pierced rococo base with applied flowers and foliage.

The recognised iron-red anchor and dagger mark appears underneath, and the glossy, slightly wet surface sheen is very characteristic of Bow.

Such mythological figures were highly fashionable in mid-18th-century porcelain, combining playful Rococo modelling with classical subject matter.

Small Bow figures of this kind have particular charm, especially when the original palette and glaze remain so fresh. Created more than 250 years ago, this is an appealing survival from one of the great early English porcelain factories.
