A Victorian Carved Oak Side Table - Late 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

Sourced from a public school in Derbyshire, this lovely little table has a moulded top carved with a border of floral lozenges above a carved frieze and scrolled supports. Finished on baluster spindle legs joined by a square stretcher and an additional carved under tier.

Overall condition is very good with age-related wear and tear. We have noted a historic burn to the top, probably where a candle has sat in the past. Please see images for details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian oak furniture is defined by robust construction, heavy timber framing, and decorative surface ornamentation. Influenced by Tudor and Gothic Revival styles, pieces often feature relief carving, lunette patterns, floral motifs, and turned supports.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid European or English oak using mortise-and-tenon joinery. Tops often incorporate panelled construction to accommodate timber movement, supported by turned legs and perimeter stretchers for stability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven hand-carving marks, natural shrinkage along the wood grain, and aged patination in recessed areas. Hardware and joinery show historical tool marks rather than uniform modern machine precision.

A carved oak table functions effectively as an accent piece beside modern upholstered seating or as a bedside table. The dark wood and textured carving contrast cleanly against modern minimal backdrops and neutral colour palettes.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain moisture. Avoid placement near direct heat sources or damp areas to prevent timber warping and finish degradation.
