Georgian Oak Livery Cupboard - Circa 1780

18th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A well-proportioned George III oak livery cupboard – circa 1780. With a moulded cornice above two rectangular fielded panels flanked by arched panel doors enclosing a large hanging space. This space retains its original wooden hooks but has also been fitted with two later brass rails, making this a useful piece in the modern home. The base features three further fielded panels and two lower drawers. Finished on stile feet.

The overall condition is excellent with age-related wear and tear and a wonderful deep rich colour.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically, a livery cupboard was used in 17th and 18th-century households to store food, linens, or clothing served as part of daily allowances or liveries to household members and servants.

Eighteenth-century examples feature solid English oak, hand-planed panels, fielded or arched door panels, hand-cut dovetail joints, brass escutcheon plates, and iron H-hinges.

Authentic Georgian pieces display hand-carved joinery, peg construction, uneven hand-sawn backboards, natural oxidisation in the wood, and historical wear around handles and keyholes.

These substantial cabinets function well as focal storage pieces in entryways, dining rooms, or bedrooms, balancing contemporary minimalist decor with natural timber texture.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain moisture without building up excess residue.
