Description

A good example of a Scottish pewter crested tappit hen of 'Scots Pint' capacity.

The tappit hen is of typical shouldered form with multiple incised bands to the shouldered body which stands on a foot rim with incised banding above. The domed lid has an acorn knop and erect thumb piece. There is a plouk inside the top, capacity to this point is 60floz. There are very good linen marks where the handle joins the body and on the lid.

Condition:

Excellent condition with a lightly polished silver grey finish and some small traces of light oxide. The are a few age related knocks as one would expect.

Repairs: There are no repairs that I could detect.

Size:

Height to top of knop: 12.00 in (30.00cm).

Base diameter: 5.00in (12.70cm).

Capacity: 60.00floz, Scottish Pint.

Weight: 1175 grams.

A Tappit Hen is a traditional Scottish pewter ale measure produced primarily during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It features a distinctively waisted body, a hinged domed lid, an erect thumbpiece, and frequently a finial or knob on the lid termed a crest.

Scottish pewterers cast these vessels using an alloy composed primarily of tin combined with lead or copper to add durability. The body sections, handle, and hinged lid were cast in separate iron moulds and subsequently soldered together before being finished on a lathe.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating casting seams, touchmarks stamped near the rim or handle, standard capacity marks, the weight of the metal alloy, and uniform surface oxidation consistent with age.
