Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Meat drainers, also known as meat strainers or platter inserts, were perforated ceramic plates designed to rest inside large serving platters during the 18th and 19th centuries. They allowed juices and fats from roasted meats to drain away into the platter base beneath, keeping the joint elevated during serving.

Most 19th-century English meat drainers were crafted from earthenware, ironstone, or pearlware. They feature hand-drilled or moulded drainage holes and were finished with underglaze transfer-printed decoration or hand-painted enamels beneath a clear protective glaze.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically display evidence of hand-finishing, such as slight irregularities around the drain holes and unglazed feet or underside edges. Look for period-appropriate maker marks, crazing beneath the glaze, and surface wear consistent with historical domestic use.

These decorative ceramic pieces can be displayed on plate stands within glazed dressers, arranged in a wall gallery using wire plate hangers, or grouped on floating shelves in a dining space. Their varied patterns add visual interest and texture to contemporary displays.

Clean these delicate ceramics gently using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives or soaking, which can cause moisture to enter micro-cracks in the glaze. Ensure they are thoroughly dried before displaying, and avoid exposing them to rapid temperature shifts or dishwashers.
