Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian polychrome giltwood wall sconces typically feature hand-carved wooden backplates embellished with gold leaf finishes and multi-coloured painted accents. Popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, these fixtures incorporate ornate scrolling ironwork arms and sculptural motifs derived from nature.

These fixtures are traditionally constructed using hand-carved softwoods such as pine or lime wood, coated in gesso and decorated with water-gilded gold leaf. The candle arms are formed from forged wrought iron, often combined with painted tempera highlights across the carved details.

Authentic period pieces exhibit visible hand-carving marks on the reverse, layers of natural gesso beneath the gilding, and reddish bole clay showing through areas of worn gold leaf. Hardware and arm mountings will show historical hand-forged iron construction rather than uniform machine production.

Wall sconces can be mounted symmetrically on either side of a chimneypiece, placed to flank a central painting or wall mirror, or arranged down a hallway to provide layered accent lighting and physical architectural detail.

Preserve giltwood fixtures by dusting gently with a dry, soft goat-hair brush. Water, liquid cleaners, and solvent-based polishes must be avoided entirely, as moisture breaks down the water-soluble gesso glue layer beneath the gold leaf.
