Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.
Once released the lid can be removed which is actually a blotter which opens up to reveal some original blotting paper and a green moire silk lined interior. The stationery compartment below is complete with the original brass topped glass inkwell (chip to one corner) and a dip pen fitted on the side of the box (Stationery for photographic purposes only).

The lock also miraculously releases the drawer underneath too, which is fully fitted to include a complete bank of postage stamp dispensers, a string box a vesta compartment which would have contained matches with a strike on the interior and an eyelet in the top to sit a lit match to melt sealing wax.

The side of the box is gold embossed with the makers mark. There is also a English design registration number which allows us to date the box accurately to the year 1896. The box when locked up is able to be carried with the original cast brass handle.
Excellent condition measuring 12 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 4 1/4".
