Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A writing slope, also known as a lap desk, is a portable wooden box featuring an angled upper lid designed to facilitate writing whilst travelling. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, these boxes contained internal compartments for inkwells, pens, paper, and personal correspondence.

Writing slopes were constructed from durable hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often decorated with burr veneers, brass edge bindings, and mother-of-pearl or brass inlay for both aesthetic appeal and structural reinforcement during transport.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature flush-fitting brass corners and straps, hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass hinges, lock mechanisms, and light natural wear or patination on the internal writing flap and timber surfaces.

Position the writing slope flat on an office desk, library table, console, or sideboard to serve as an accent piece or stylish storage solution for modern stationery.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the burr veneer from lifting or cracking, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to retain the wood lustre and protect the brass inlay.
