'the Three Graces' - A 19th Century Carved Marble Study

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Culvertons

This 19th century marble study of the Three Graces evokes the same reaction from viewers as its ancient predecessors have for millennia. The three Graces are goddesses in Greek mythology – Aglaia (elegance), Euphrosyne (mirth), and Thalia (youth/beauty). Every piece has been meticulously carved from marble, with their graceful, interwoven shapes designed to evoke a sense of shared friendship, chastity, delight, beauty and love. Naturally, after around 160 years, this complex group has undergone restoration. The visible cracks on Thalia’s legs were repaired at an earlier stage in the sculpture’s history, and a fine hairline fracture remains on Euphrosyne’s right foot. Although there are other minor losses, none detract from the viewer’s enjoyment. Indeed, this charming group possesses an air of antiquity, making such imperfections easy to overlook, for its beauty is unmistakably enduring.
