Imari porcelain refers to a style of Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province. Characterised by rich underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gold decorations, these items became widely sought after across Europe from the late seventeenth century onwards.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from high-fired porcelain clay, featuring dark blue underglaze decoration paired with overglaze enamels. Artisans applied iron-red and subtle gilding before a second, lower-temperature firing to set the surface colours.
