Antique Regency Mahogany Dining Chairs – Set of Six with Cane Seats, Five Singles & One Carver

19th century
Description

A very elegant set of antique English Regency mahogany dining chairs consisting of five singles and one carver, retaining their original cane seats and attractive brass mounts.

Beautifully constructed in solid mahogany, the chairs have developed a rich colour and patina over nearly two centuries. The frames are refined in typical Regency taste with swept sabre legs and elegant proportions, while the carver chair features graceful scrolled arms terminating in carved roundels with brass stud decoration.

Each chair has a decorative spiral turned top rail and a shaped central splat decorated with a classical brass shell mount. Additional brass rosette mounts strengthen the joints and provide subtle decorative detail.

Cane seats were particularly popular during the Regency period as they were lighter than upholstered seating and provided a cooler, practical surface for dining rooms and morning rooms. The cane panels remain strong and supportive.

Sets such as this would originally have been used around a dining table with the armchair placed at the head for the host while the single chairs completed the sides of the table.

A handsome and practical Regency dining set with excellent colour and classical character.

Condition Report

Good antique condition with age related wear consistent with use. The mahogany frames display a pleasing patina with minor historic marks. The cane seats are in good order and supportive. Brass mounts and decorative details are original and present well.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency dining chairs, popular in early 19th-century Britain, feature classical proportions inspired by Greek and Roman designs. They frequently incorporate sabre legs, rope-twist top rails, mahogany timber, and woven cane seats.

High-quality Regency dining chairs were constructed using solid mahogany or rosewood frames for strength and fine grain. Woven rattan cane was utilised for light seating surfaces, often accented with brass ornament or carved crest rails.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, woven cane work, and characteristic features like curved sabre legs and reeded or twisted top rails. Natural age patina, minor wear around joints, and period-appropriate brass details also distinguish original examples from later reproductions.

Pair a set of Regency mahogany chairs with a minimalist oak or glass dining table to create a balanced contrast. Using tie-on seat cushions in neutral linen fabrics can soften the wood tones while preserving the structural silhouette of the frames.

Keep cane seats slightly hydrated by wiping the underside periodically with a damp cloth to prevent brittle snapping. Apply beeswax polish along the mahogany frames to protect the finish, avoiding synthetic spray cleaners and direct sunlight exposure.
