Antique William IV Rosewood Adjustable Piano Stool C.1830

19th century
Description

A William IV rosewood adjustable piano stool, the circular needlework seat within a deep burgundy velvet surround, raised on a turned and carved pedestal with a thick brass adjustable column, atop a tripod base with scroll-carved feet.

Ideal for use as intended at a piano, but also particularly useful today as a dressing table stool, or as a decorative occasional stool in a sitting room.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age and some historic veneer repairs to the base. Structurally sound, well presented and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1830.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV furniture, dating from 1830 to 1837, bridges the transition between the refined elegance of the Regency era and the heavier, decorative forms of the Victorian period. Furniture from this era often features robust proportions, prominent acanthus leaf carving, turned columns, and rich timbers such as rosewood and mahogany.

19th-century piano stools were typically crafted from solid timbers or fine veneers such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut. Height adjustment was achieved using an internal wooden or iron threaded spindle, while seats were upholstered in velvet, leather, or hand-stitched needlepoint tapestry.

Authentic William IV piano stools generally feature a heavy triform base supported by scroll or claw feet, alongside a central pedestal with carved acanthus foliage. The height-adjusting screw mechanism inside should be made of thick turned wood or cast iron rather than modern thin metal threads.

An antique adjustable stool serves as versatile occasional seating in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, and can also be styled alongside a desk or dressing table. Its compact footprint and distinct silhouette make it suitable for filling empty alcoves or adding historical detail to contemporary decor.

To preserve rosewood furniture, keep it away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or bleaching. Clean the wooden surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, while ensuring the height-adjusting wooden screw is kept clean and dust-free without applying harsh liquid lubricants.
