Antique Silver Gilt Scent Flask/perfume Bottle with Coronet Engraving - C.1690

17th century
For Sale by Artisan Antiques (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

We are delighted to offer this exquisite silver-gilt scent/perfume flask made c.1690, of continental European origin.

The bottle exudes opulence, splendour yet with a timeless classical charm – the exterior being richly gilt (gold on top of solid silver) yet with an understated teardrop form.

Remarkably, the flask’s original exterior case has survived, which is exceptional in itself. The form is solid, elegant, and the push buttons on either end still work to reveal either the full flask or just the tip from which the lid can be unscrewed without exposing the rest of its body.

On one side of the flask, a beautiful hand-engraved armorial is present. We are still in the process of researching the arms; however, it appears that a Marquess’ coronet is present on top of the cartouche.

Overall, a splendid and exemplary piece of late 17th century silver, rich with history, quality and remaining in remarkable condition considering its age. Perfect for the uncompromising collector or as an exquisite gift for someone special.

This piece is unmarked, as was common with small articles of this period (particularly continental origin), and as such we have tested it for silver.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late seventeenth century, scent flasks were personal vanity items used by European nobility to carry perfumed oils, essences, or aromatic waters. Frequently crafted from precious metals, these compact vessels served both functional hygiene purposes and as status symbols displaying family coats of arms or coronets.

High-status scent flasks from the Baroque era were typically constructed from sterling silver or silver gilt, also known as vermeil, which features a thin layer of gold applied over silver. Custom protective cases were commonly crafted from hardened leather, shagreen, or velvet-lined wood.

Authenticity is evaluated through period-correct hand-engraving techniques, genuine wear on high points where the gold layer thins over time, and Makers or purity hallmarks where present. Tool marks from hand-chasing and appropriate age-related oxidisation within engraved crevices also indicate original period construction.

Small historic metalwork pieces style exceptionally well inside glass-fronted curio cabinets, atop stacked art books, or arranged on decorative vanity trays. Placing tiny antique objects alongside structured contemporary textures creates an engaging visual contrast in residential spaces.

Silver gilt surfaces require delicate care, as abrasive polishes can permanently remove the gold layer. Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to gently lift dust and avoid liquid chemical cleaners, excess moisture, or direct contact with modern perfumes.
