Rams Head Antiques has dated this Portrait Miniature Gilt Stand to the 1850s.
It was created in 1628 for Nicholas Tufton, 1st Baron Tufton. He had already succeeded as second Baron of Hothfield in 1631 and been created Baron Tufton of Tufton in the County of Sussex in 1626 also in the Peerage of England.

This is very well painted portrait miniature of Henry Tufton who was the last Earl of Thanet. A full length portrait of Henry as a boy in the manner of Gainsboroughs pink boy possibly painted by Francis Nichols is in the Abbot Hall Art Collection in the Kendal Gallery.
The painting is on an ivorine panel and in a smart oval gilt metal frame which measures 10 cms by 8 cms overall.
