Large Art Nouveau Style Giltwood Picture Frame

1900 - 1920
Description

A large decorative giltwood picture frame, of rectangular form, richly moulded with continuous high-relief ornament. The broad frieze is decorated with flowing Art Nouveau–inspired foliate scrolls interspersed with stylised blossoms and fruiting motifs, the sinuous stems running rhythmically around the frame. The inner sight edge is defined by a narrow geometric border, while the outer edge is finished with a small bead-and-reel style moulding.

The surface is finished in a warm matte gilt, emphasising the depth and movement of the carving.
