Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian circular dining tables are defined by their round tops designed for sociability and their sturdy, central pedestal or cross-form bases. Crafted predominantly from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, these tables often feature substantial turned supports and moulded edges appropriate to 19th-century British furniture design.

Tables from this period were constructed using traditional joinery methods, including pegged cross-stretcher bases, hand-cut dovetails, and mortise and tenon joints. The circular tops were typically built from multiple solid oak planks joined together, resting on turned central pillars and heavy block feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of period craftsmanship, such as subtle hand-planing marks on the underside, period-correct hardware, and natural timber shrinkage across the grain over time. Original patination, uneven wear on the base from footwear, and historical timber oxidisation also indicate genuine age.

A Victorian oak table can be styled by pairing it with streamlined contemporary dining chairs to create a balanced contrast of eras. Placing the table centrally under modern pendant lighting allows the natural oak grain and dark patination to anchor the rooms design.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Spills should be wiped up immediately, and heat or moisture mats should be used to protect the timber surface from damage.
