Balkan/ottoman Rat-tail Snaphaunce Flintlock Pistol, 18th Century With Highly Engraved Brass Mounts
£1,250 $1,689 €1,439
A good original example of a Balkan/Ottoman rat-tail snaphaunce pistol, dating from the 18th century, circa 1730–1780. The pistol retains its characteristic snaphaunce lock with external rat-tail sear bar and dog safety, typical of pistols produced in the Ottoman Balkan regions such as Bosnia and Albania during this period.
The iron barrel is mounted within a long, curved brass-sheathed grip decorated with engraved foliate scrollwork and raised bosses along the spine, a decorative scheme commonly encountered on Balkan pistols of the period. The lock and barrel show a consistent aged patina, while the engraved brass furniture retains good decorative detail.
A striking and authentic example of an Ottoman-Balkan flintlock pistol, displaying well and representative of regional 18th-century gunmaking traditions.
