Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century, Italian cabinetmakers produced commodes characterised by architectural proportions, intricate wood marquetry, and rich walnut veneers. Influenced by Baroque and Neoclassical movements, these chests served as central decorative storage pieces in grand residences.

These pieces were primarily crafted using solid walnut and walnut veneers, often incorporating fruitwood or dark wood inlays. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, pine secondary timbers, and hand-cast brass hardware including drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed secondary woods, uneven hand-cut dovetail joinery, and thick hand-sawn veneers showing slight shrinkage over time. Hardware displays natural oxidisation, while drawer bottoms typically fit into hand-carved grooves.

Position the chest as a focal statement piece in a hallway or dining room, contrasting its dark timber with modern abstract wall art placed above. Tempering the heavy wood with contemporary lighting and neutral upholstery creates a balanced interior scheme.

Maintain walnut surfaces by applying a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity variations to protect the marquetry from lifting or warping.
