Pepperbox Pistol, J.r. Cooper’s Patent. A Six-shot Percussion Pepperbox Pistol, Birmingham Proofed, Circa 1839

19th century
Description

A good original example of a six-shot percussion pepperbox pocket pistol dating from the early Victorian period, circa 1839. The steel frame is engraved with a scroll cartouche bearing the inscription “J.R. Cooper’s Patent”, a system widely adopted by the Birmingham gun trade during the late 1830s and early 1840s.

The pistol retains its fluted six-barrel cluster measuring approximately 3 inches, with Birmingham proof marks visible on the barrel flats. The frame shows attractive period scroll engraving and is fitted with a chequered walnut bag-shaped grip and ring trigger guard typical of compact pocket pistols of the period.

A well-proportioned early pepperbox pistol of pocket size, measuring approximately 19 cm overall, remaining a pleasing and honest example of early multi-shot civilian firearms.

• Mechanism working

• Metal surfaces showing light age wear and patina consistent with period

• Engraving still visible and attractive

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pepperbox pistol is a multi-barrelled repeating firearm developed during the early to mid-19th century. It features multiple barrels arranged around a central revolving axis, operating via a percussion mechanism before the single-barrel revolver became standard.

These firearms were typically constructed from forged steel or iron components, often paired with hand-carved wooden grips made from walnut or ebony. Key metal sections were frequently engraved with scrollwork and stamped with regional proof marks.

Authentication involves examining official proof marks, such as Birmingham or London gunmaker symbols stamped on the barrel cluster. Inspectors also evaluate hand-cut thread screws, age-appropriate patination, engraved patent details, and period mechanical alignment.

Historical firearms are commonly mounted inside custom glazed shadow boxes or set upon brass display stands. They serve as decorative accents within bookshelves, study desk displays, or dedicated cabinets of curiosities.

Metal surfaces require periodic applications of microcrystalline wax or non-acidic gun oil to prevent oxidisation and corrosion. Storage should be maintained in a temperature-stable environment with low humidity, wiping timber handles with a dry cloth.
