Antique Victorian Jug - N.w.p. Co. (Crica 1878-91)

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A large Victorian transferware jug by the New Wharf Pottery & Co. of Burslem Staffordshire. The mark to the underside dates this piece to c.1878-91 (from 1891 onwards 'ENGLAND' is generally included). The "B" after the initials is for the town of Burslem and the pattern name given is 'Vine'.

The overall condition is very good, with a strong colour to the pattern and no chips, marks or cracks present. Some very fine crazing to the glaze but overall a lovely example of this now rare pattern.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Transferware pottery features decorative patterns applied using copper-plate tissue paper prints transferred onto earthenware or ironstone prior to glazing, a method refined by British potteries in the 19th century.

These vessels were typically formed from glazed earthenware or refined white ironstone, decorated with ceramic oxide inks applied via transfer prints.

Authentic pieces feature underglaze maker backstamps, registration marks, subtle misalignment in the transfer pattern seams, and fine surface crazing within the glaze.

Place the jug on a sideboard, kitchen counter, or dining table as a standalone decorative piece or functional floral vase.

Hand wash gently with warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads or modern dishwashers to prevent glaze degradation.
