A Rare Qing Dynasty Celadon-glazed Fluted Bottle Vase 18th -19th Century

19th century
Description

An exceptionally elegant and finely potted bottle vase, dating to the Qing Dynasty (18th-19th Century). The globular body is meticulously moulded with crisp vertical fluting, creating a rhythmic texture that radiates from the shoulder to the base. It is enveloped in an even, luminous sea-green celadon glaze that artfully thins on the raised ribs and edges, a deliberate technique used to define the form and highlight the precision of the potting. The vase is surmounted by a tall, tapering neck rising to a flared, slightly lipped rim, all supported by a neatly pared, unglazed foot rim showing a characteristic buff-colored porcelain paste.

Dimensions: 14.8cm high

Condition:

The vase is in a good state of preservation with no signs of chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. Exhaustive inspection under UV light confirms no signs of restoration or overpainting.

Provenance:

The G S. May Esquire Private Collection, London

Purchase from Asian Works of Art.

Auction Reference:

Compare with a nearly identical white-glazed fluted bottle vase (Qing Dynasty, 18th-19th Century), formerly in the Art Institute of Chicago (Kate Sturges Buckingham Collection), sold at Christie’s New York, 12 September 2010, Lot 742.

Celadon refers to a green-glazed ceramic style developed in Asia, known for its translucent glaze coloured by iron oxide. Bottle vases with narrow necks and fluted lower bodies became prominent decorative forms during the Qing Dynasty in China.

These ceramics are formed from refined kaolin porcelain clay coated in a feldspathic glaze containing iron content. Fired in a reduction kiln atmosphere, the iron reacts to produce shades ranging from pale willow to sea-green hues.

Authentic historic celadon displays characteristic glaze depth, clean foot-rim finishing devoid of heavy glaze runs, and subtle surface variations. The proportions of the vessel and the weight of the underlying porcelain body also correspond to period-specific techniques.

A celadon bottle vase functions as a refined accent when placed on a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or within a minimalist shelving display. The muted green tone complements neutral palette schemes and contemporary or traditional furnishings.

Dust celadon porcelain regularly using a soft, dry cloth. If cleaning is required, use lukewarm distilled water with a gentle, non-abrasive soap, ensuring the piece is completely dried afterwards and kept away from extreme thermal changes.
