18th Century Black Lacquer Chinoiserie Two Door Corner Cabinet

18th century
Description

A charming and decorative 18th century black lacquer chinoiserie corner cabinet, richly hand painted with traditional oriental scenes and floral decoration. The gently shaped doors are adorned with lively gilt and polychrome designs depicting figures in landscapes, stylised flowers, and a fisherman seated in a small boat, all set within a scrolling garden scene. These whimsical motifs are characteristic of European chinoiserie decoration popular during the 18th century, reflecting the fascination with Asian art and design at the time.

The cabinet is constructed to fit neatly into a corner, with a shaped front and moulded cornice. Opening the two doors reveals a painted interior with a series of shaped corner shelves, providing useful storage for ceramics, small decorative objects, or books. The hinges and escutcheon are simple yet attractive brass fittings which complement the dark lacquered surface.

The lacquer has developed a pleasing patina over time, with gentle craquelure and wear that add to its authentic antique character. The hand painted decoration remains vibrant and highly decorative, making the piece both a practical storage cabinet and an eye-catching display item.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinoiserie furniture from the 18th century features European interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions, characterised by raised gilding, decorative oriental landscapes, and intricate japanned or lacquered finishes.

These pieces were typically constructed with pine or oak carcasses, coated with built-up layers of spirit varnishes or resins to imitate Asian lacquer, and decorated with gilding and brass hardware.

Authentic 18th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-forged brass butterfly hinges, fine surface craquelure within the lacquer, and natural wear patterns around handles and edges.

Positioning a Chinoiserie corner cabinet in an underutilised room corner creates a focal point that contrasts dark, detailed historical decoration against clean, modern architectural lines.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent timber movement, and never apply chemical solvents or harsh liquid waxes.
