Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gueridon is a circular table supported by a central pedestal stem or column, originating in 17th-century France. Historically used as decorative centre tables or candle stands, these pieces evolved during the Regency and Empire periods to incorporate marble tops and figure-grained mahogany veneers.

Craftsmen typically constructed these tables using timber framework overlaid with flame mahogany veneers. Tops were frequently fitted with fitted marble slabs, while bases featured hand-carved mahogany scroll feet and brass castors.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut joinery, thick hand-sawn timber veneers, and natural patination on the underside. Original marble tops often exhibit minor edge wear and hand-finished undersides rather than modern machine sanding.

Place the table as a central focal point in an entry hall or foyer beneath a chandelier or pendant light. Contrast the dark mahogany timber and marble top with simple ceramic vessels or contemporary sculptural objects.

Dust timber components regularly with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically in the direction of the grain. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner, wiping away spills immediately to avoid etching the surface.
