A fine Charles II olive wood cabinet on stand, England, late 17th century.
The cabinet veneered throughout in richly figured olive wood. The interior fitted with an arrangement of small drawers around a central locking cupboard, each drawer retaining its original gilt brass drop handles and escutcheons.
The cabinet stands on a later base with turned legs united by a shaped stretcher.
Pieces veneered in olive wood were produced in limited numbers during the late 17th century and were highly prized for the striking natural figure of the timber. Cabinets of this type reflect the influence of continental craftsmanship and the growing fashion for complex interior fittings and secret compartments in English furniture of the period.
A handsome and practical piece of late Stuart furniture, combining strong architectural form with beautifully figured veneers.
England, circa 1680.
