A very unique large twin pedestal desk with a rare writing slope.
This is an exceptional example of mid-Victorian craftsmanship, circa 1860 , a twin-pedestal desk that carries the substantial weight and presence of a 19th-century study. Coming to the market for the very first time since its removal from a local period Victorian solicitor''s office , the piece offers a rare, direct link to its professional past. Constructed from rich, figured mahogany , the desk measures a generous 1530mm in length by 805mm deep . Crucially, it retains its original French polished finish throughout, which we have carefully cleaned and hand-waxed in our workshop. This has allowed us to preserve a truly fantastic patina —the wood possesses that deep, honeyed glow and ''lived-in'' character that only 160 years of careful use can produce.
The desktop features its original deep purple leather skiver , showing a distinguished level of wear that perfectly complements th...e aged mahogany. A particularly rare find is the accompanying mahogany writing slope , which sits atop the desk and features its own worn black leather centre. The provenance here is undeniable: the ''shadow'' on the main purple hide beneath the slope reveals the leather in its original, brighter state, proving these two pieces have remained a pair since they were new.
The drawers are a joy to use, running smoothly on professionally checked runners and featuring fine hand-cut dovetail joints with original turned mahogany knobs. Security is handled by the original brass lever locks , all of which are in perfect working order and operated by an original key.
Designed to be seen from all angles, the desk is fully polished to the rear , making it an ideal ''clerk''s desk'' that can sit proudly in the centre of a room. This historic piece is also surprisingly practical for the modern home office. The writing slope provides a perfect ergonomic angle for a laptop or keyboard, or can even be used as a sturdy, stylish riser for a computer monitor.
For a piece of such scale, it is surprisingly practical; it breaks down into three sections for transport, and each pedestal sits on four recessed castors hidden behind the plinth . This allows the desk to be moved easily while maintaining its solid, grounded silhouette. This is a rare, ''workshop-fresh'' piece that perfectly balances professional restoration with the irreplaceable soul of a true Victorian antique.
Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.
