Original Antique Georgian Mahogany Chest Bank of 5 Drawers Restored with Key C1820

18th century
Description

Antique Georgian Mahogany Chest of 5 Drawers on bracket feet

An exceptional condition original Georgian chest of drawers.

This particularly handsome English Georgian Mahogany chest of drawers, dating to circa 1820. The chest boasts an idyllic, lightly faded honey mahogany colour complete with its original french polished finish with lots character and charm. The quality and condition of this piece are truly exceptional, offering that sought-after mellow glow that only comes from two centuries of careful use. Unusually this chest retains its original Georgian working warded locks, complete with original key. Furthermore, the interiors of the drawers are remarkably clean and entirely free from staining, a condition which is very uncommon for a piece of this age and truly underscores how well it has been cared for throughout its history.

The top is finished with a crisp cross-banded edge and an Ebony border inlay. The chest has a great stance, sitting on a reeded base supported by its original solid bracket feet. The internal quality is exactly what a collector looks for, featuring Oak sidings and clean, finely hand-cut dovetails, with all cockbeading present and correct.

In keeping with its history, the chest was updated during the Victorian era with turned mahogany knobs, which is quite common with the Victorian era's fashions. While it would have originally sported brass droppers, these 19th-century additions have become part of the piece's unique story and suit the chest's proportions perfectly.

The chests original French polished finish has been traditionally revived and restored to bring the grain back to life without losing any of its beautiful character. For the modern home, we have meticulously gone through the drawer runners, repairing and rebuilding them where necessary to ensure a smooth, daily-use action that is often missing in unrestored pieces. This is a remarkably clean, honest, and functional piece of English furniture with a fantastic, authentic colour.

This lovely restored chest of drawers is in home ready condition and is fit for every day use for many more years to come.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian chests of drawers, crafted between 1714 and 1830, typically feature balanced classical proportions, native or imported cabinet timbers such as mahogany, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and functional configurations like two short drawers over three long drawers.

Cabinetmakers during this period predominantly utilised solid and veneered mahogany, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, hand-forged iron locks, brass escutcheons, and turned timber drawer knobs.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber surfaces, irregular dovetail joints with visible scribe marks, original iron lock mechanisms, and natural wood shrinkage consistent with age along the top and side panels.

Balance the deep timber tones by pairing the chest with contemporary neutral wall colours, minimalist table lamps, or clean-lined modern artwork displayed directly above the top surface.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, wiping along the grain, and maintain a consistent indoor environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
