Outstanding Antique Victorian Solid Walnut Maple & Co Dickens 15 Drawer Writing Desk With Keys Restored C1890
£2,400 $3,204 €2,802
Outstanding Victorian Walnut Dickens Desk.
An incredibly rare and wonderfully ornate piece.
We are delighted to bring to you this truly fantastic and very rare English Victorian Dickens desk made from solid Walnut by the prestigious Maple & Co. of London. Dating to circa 1890 , as we are restorers, this piece has undergone a sympathetic and full professional restoration in our workshop, including a meticulous re-polishing that showcases the deep, figured grain and honeyed tones of the Walnut. The desk follows the iconic twin-pedestal silhouette, crowned by a tiered superstructure featuring two banks of three small drawers flanking a central, balustraded spindle gallery. The focal point is the hinged writing well, which opens smoothly on a brass stay to reveal a spacious storage interior lined in a vibrant green baize - perfect for stationery or a laptop.
The craftsmanship is exemplary of the Maple & Co reputation for innovation; the drawers feature machine-cut dovetails to the... base drawers , a technique they pioneered to ensure lifelong structural integrity, and are constructed with solid gum tree backings . Every drawer has been thoroughly checked over and serviced in our workshop; they all run exceptionally smoothly with little to no drawer wear. The desk remains highly functional and secure, provided with two keys : one dedicated to the upper writing slope and a second master key that operates the locks for the pedestals and frieze drawers. While the desk is complete, we believe the lock mechanisms may have been changed at some point in its history (however, they are all period correct locks). Completing the aesthetic are the original brass drop handles and escutcheons , which have been lightly hand-polished to a soft glow, perfectly complementing the rich walnut colour.
The drawer pedestals have panelled sides and the entire piece stands proudly on a classic plinth base . For practical ease, the desk is designed to separate into three distinct sections (the top and two pedestals), making transport and installation in upper-floor rooms straightforward and safe. This is a rare, investment-grade piece of English history, bearing the famous Maple & Co. maker''s mark as a permanent seal of quality.
Please note this item is in beautiful condition for its age as shown in the photographs below, however, being an antique item it does have minor imperfections in places.
