Port. Imperial German Prussian Infantry Pickelhaube Helmet, Model 1895, Other Ranks – Fr Eagle Plate, Kaiserreich Period

19th century
For Sale by Peter Harris Clocks & Militaria (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

An original Imperial German Prussian infantry Pickelhaube helmet of the Model 1895 pattern, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century during the Kaiserreich period.

The helmet retains its classic black lacquered leather body fitted with brass mounts including the characteristic fluted spike mounted on a cruciform base with domed securing studs. To the front is the large stamped brass Prussian eagle helmet plate displaying the crowned eagle clutching sceptre and orb, with the applied intertwined “FR” (Friedrich Rex) cypher to the chest beneath the royal crown. The plate represents the standard emblem worn by Prussian line infantry regiments of the Imperial German Army.

The helmet is fitted with its original brass front trim and rear trim, and retains the correct other ranks brass scale chinstrap mounted on circular side bosses with the Imperial and Prussian cockades. The fittings display a pleasing, even patina consistent with age.

The interior retains its original issue liner with cloth-covered finger segments surrounding the central spike fixing plate, a configuration commonly encountered on later service helmets of the period. The leather shell remains firm with good overall form and the lacquered finish showing light age-related wear and surface crazing consistent with service use.

Pickelhauben such as this formed the iconic headgear of the Imperial German Army from the mid-19th century until the First World War, when they were gradually replaced in front-line service by the steel Stahlhelm. Helmets of this type would have been worn by Prussian infantry soldiers both on parade and during the early stages of the Great War.

A good honest example of the classic Prussian infantry Pickelhaube.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed in 1842 by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, the Pickelhaube was a spiked leather helmet worn by German military, police, and firefighters throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The shell was crafted from boiled leather finished with a black lacquer, while the fittings, including the front plate (Wappen), spine, visor trim, and top spike, were pressed from brass or tombak.

Original helmets feature genuine boiled leather construction with age-appropriate craquelure, stamped brass fittings mounted via leather wedges or split pins, and original rear spine ventilation rivets.

Display the helmet on a dedicated wooden or brass tall stand within a glass cabinet, bookshelf alcove, or dark wood desk setting to serve as a historic focal point.

Keep the helmet in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, treat the leather gently with conservation wax if necessary, and clean the metal fittings using soft dry cloths without harsh chemical polishes.
