Late 18th Century Balkan Ottoman Flintlock Holster Pistol with Brass Mounts and Silver Inlay. Dating to C.1770–1790, It Places the Pistol Firmly in the Late Ottoman Cavalry Frontier Period,

18th century
Description

A good original example of a Balkan Ottoman flintlock holster pistol, dating from the late 18th century.

The pistol is fitted with a long steel barrel measuring approximately 13.5 inches, engraved with decorative scrollwork along the top flat, and mounted with a finely engraved flintlock mechanism. It retains its distinctive brass furniture including an engraved side plate with hunting scene decoration, brass trigger guard and a large flared pommel cap typical of pistols produced in the Balkan regions under Ottoman influence.

The walnut stock shows carved decoration to the fore-end and retains traces of silver wire and applied silver ornament to the grip. The pistol measures approximately 20.5 inches overall and features an unusual decorative scroll-form trigger within the guard. The surfaces display attractive age patination and honest wear consistent with use and age.

A characterful and well-made example of an Ottoman frontier holster pistol.

Condition Report:

• Mechanism present and complete, stiff but working.

• Barrel with age-related wear and patination.

• Stock showing wear and darkening around the lock area from historic use

• Silver inlay largely worn or partially lost

• Brass mounts with good colour and patina.

The pistol shows much historic usage, which in my option adds to it's interest & charm. It appears to be original and complete.

Measurements:

• Overall length: 20.5 inches (52 cm)

• Barrel length: 13.5 inches (34 cm)

Please note:

This item is sold as a historical antique. All photographs form part of the description and condition.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ottoman Balkan flintlock pistols were sidearms produced across the Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, featuring distinctive regional brass mountings and elaborate decorative inlay.

These firearms typically featured forged iron or steel barrels, walnut or hardwood stocks, cast brass furniture, and decorative silver or brass wire inlay along the grip and barrel.

Authentic pieces generally display period flintlock mechanisms, regional steel chiselling, hand-cast brass butt caps with bulbous profiles, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear.

In modern interiors, mounted antique pistols serve as focal historical artefacts displayed in glazed shadow boxes, on bespoke acrylic stands within a bookshelf, or mounted above a mantelpiece.

Preservation involves keeping the ironwork lightly sealed with microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation, preserving aged brass patinas without abrasive chemicals, and storing in a climate-controlled environment.
