Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A monks bench, also known as a table chair, is a multi-functional piece of furniture designed with a hinged backrest that pivots down over the armrests to form a tabletop. Originating in medieval Europe and popularized during the 19th-century Jacobean Revival, it provided space-saving versatility by combining seating, storage, and a flat dining or writing surface within a single frame.

Traditional settles are constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. The base often includes a hinged lid opening into a hollow storage chest, framed by hand-carved geometric or botanical panels and supported by turned wooden balusters.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, irregular pegged joints, and natural wear around the pivot pins where the top rotates. The underside of the bench seat and internal chest panels typically display uneven patination, oxidisation of the timber, and historical tool marks.

In modern interiors, a carved oak bench serves as a functional focal point in an entryway or hallway, softened with a neutral wool runner or textured linen cushions. Modern lighting, such as a minimalist table lamp placed nearby, creates contrast against the detailed timber carvings.

Solid oak should be treated periodically with a high-quality beeswax polish applied along the grain to maintain moisture and patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiator vents to prevent the timber from warping, splitting, or drying out.
