Worcester Dragon in Compartments Inkwell, Flight Barr & Barr, C. 1820

Description

A rare Worcester porcelain inkwell produced during the Flight, Barr & Barr period, circa 1820. Compact drum form with side pockets and scroll handle, incorporating a central inkwell aperture, three circular apertures and graduated holders for writing implements. Richly gilded and finely potted.

The Dragon in Compartments pattern, derived from Kangxi famille-verte porcelain, was among Worcester’s most prized decorative schemes of the late Georgian and Regency era. The present example shows the sinuous dragon within shaped reserves framed by dense gilt ornament.

The base bears a paper label for “The Flight Collection”, linking the piece to the Worcester collection formed by Howard Emerson Flight, descendant of Thomas Flight. Important parts of this focused collection were dispersed at Bonhams and Toovey’s.

A scarce and highly collectible Regency writing accessory.

Inside the central cavity there are underglaze firing cracks; they do not extend through and are not visible from the underside even under UV inspection. Wear to gilding along the upper rim. Overpainting visible within one side pocket.
