A Scottish coopered peat bucket is a traditional wooden container made using barrel-making techniques, specifically crafted to hold dried peat sods for burning in domestic hearths during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These buckets were constructed by skilled coopers who fitted vertical wooden staves togetheroften using alternating light and dark timbersand bound them tightly with brass or iron hoops secured by metal rivets.

Authentic period examples feature genuine staved construction rather than modern glued veneers, heavy brass or iron binding bands with hand-set rivets, and natural patina or age-related shrinkage between the staves.

In contemporary spaces, these versatile vessels are frequently positioned beside a wood-burning stove or hearth as a log holder, utilized as decorative planters, or placed in entryways to hold umbrellas.

To preserve the materials, keep the bucket away from direct high heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage, apply a high-quality beeswax polish to the timber, and lightly buff the brass bindings without removing the natural oxidisation.
