A Magnificently Potted Blue and White "Scholar’s Study" Bowl - Qing Dynasty

19th century
Description

A Magnificently Potted Blue and White "Scholar’s Study" Bowl

China, Late Qing Dynasty, Guangxu Period (1875–1908)

Of exceptionally large and refined proportions, this deep, flared bowl is a testament to the technical "Renaissance" of the Guangxu period. Standing 12.5cm high with a commanding 21.5cm diameter, the vessel is masterfully potted with remarkably thin walls, resulting in an ethereal weight of only 456g. The high-fired, resonant body produces a clear, bell-like tone when struck, confirming its flawless structural integrity.

The exterior is painted in a vibrant, tiered cobalt blue with a continuous narrative scene of Scholars in a Garden. The figures are rendered with exquisite "fine-line" brushwork, shown in contemplation amongst ornamental rockwork and lush foliage. The flared rim is punctuated by a series of auspicious symbols from the Bajixiang, including the Endless Knot and the Vase of Peace.

The interior is equally distinguished, featuring a central medallion of "Boys at Play"—a classic motif representing a wish for abundant and successful descendants. The glaze is of a characteristic "mutton-fat" quality, possessing a soft, waxy lustre.

The base bears an underglaze blue six-character apocryphal Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi mark within a double ring. original early-20th-century

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
