Large Mid 18th Century Oil Portrait Painting of a Medical Doctor Physician

18th century
Description

An lovely authentic mid 18th century oil on canvas portrait of a Physician in medicine.

The work depicts the sitter in a brown suit before a shelf of books with an elbow upon a table with papers beneath, the title of which appears to read 'Practical theory on amputation...'. The sitter holds a book in his right hand titled 'Haller', presumably Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777), a Swiss anatomist, physiologist, naturalist, encyclopedist, bibliographer and poet.

There is minor age related fine craquelure as is expected due to age and the painted surface is all stable.

There has been past conservation work undertaken including a canvas reline and replaced wooden stretchers.

Presented in an antique decorative gilt frame which has a few minor repairs which have now been fully restored and are hardly unnoticeable.

This is an interesting portrait of good scale, nicely rendered and full of realism and charactor.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-18th-century British portraiture, primarily from the Georgian era, is recognised for realistic depictions of sitters showcasing their profession, wealth, or social stature through formal clothing, wigs, and serene poses.

Artists during this period typically used hand-ground oil pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto natural linen or hemp stretched canvas attached to hand-carved wooden stretcher frames.

Authenticity is verified through natural craquelure patterns across the paint layers, evidence of hand-woven canvas texture, historical canvas lining or stretcher construction, and oxidation on the reverse side.

A Georgian portrait can be mounted above a dark wood sideboard, integrated into a curated gallery wall, or paired with minimalist modern furniture to create an eclectic visual contrast.

Preserve antique oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush, and consulting a professional art conservator for deep varnish removal or canvas repairs.
